St. Aidan’s Track Meet
On Saturday, June 2nd, the St. Aidan’s CYO track meet took place at the Herricks HS. The day didn’t start with the best weather. It was overcast, windy, and the rain was in the air. But it was gradually improving and participants had to apply their sunscreen in order to survive the afternoon session without harm. There were more schools participating in this meet than other track meets and the organizers also implemented one extra discipline resulting in a long racing day. The day ran smoothly without glitches, though. The OLL Malverne track team, grades 4-8, arrived in usual strength. The table shows placement breakdown. Coach Mike distributed a meet roster with runner names printed in grade matrix. What a time saver and excellent visual cue! All the coaches had to do was to shade the fields of runners who were present, to get picture of complete or incomplete teams. Can you feel my excitement?
The track meet for higher grades started with one-mile run, followed by 800 m relay, 400 m relay, 400 m medley, 300 m mixed medley and a dash at the end. The table breaks down the placements, but there is a new element more important. I noticed how boys were running with their head and thinking strategically. They were saving their strength for the sprint finish instead of starting fast out and slowing down.
Placement | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
Count | 8 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 1 |
The table doesn’t include the mile run and dash races.
