The first CYO indoor track meet of the season took place at the state-of-the-art facility of the St. Anthony’s high school on Sunday, March 4. The CYO Nassau/Suffolk officials opened the track season in a nontraditional way—meet first, practices later. The availability of the track certainly played a significant role. The meet was open to any child regardless of spring track registration. Children in grades 1–3 had opportunity to compare their speed with peers from different schools and experience something new. The OLL Malverne track team participated in this event with 13 runners. They were fresh after winter and very competitive.
The event started with relays. As it is common, the kids formed teams, each consisting of 4 members. When there were not enough kids of the same age, or on the contrary, there were too many of them, they were mixed with other teams so every child could participate. Some kids of our OLL Malverne track team were running together with kids of St. Anne’s, or St. Parick’s teams. The track event had a relaxed atmosphere and went so fast that the individual disciplines (dashes) could take place, as well. The meet was completed by 2:15. The coaches were reminded that runners should not wear any jewelery, including strings dangling around their necks or bands on wrists.
CYO Indoor Track Meet March 18
There will be a similar CYO indoor track meet taking place on Sunday, March 18, for children in grades 4–8. The meet will also be open to all children regardless the spring program registration, but the coaches have to submit the number of runners that will run in their teams. If interested, contact your coach ahead of time, or use the Contact tab above. Once the track meet program is determined, it will be posted here. The runners registered for spring 2012 will be notified by email. The registration for the spring program is open till March 31st for the regular fee. It increases after that date.
